Super Kena is spot on. A brilliant story-line that anyone young and old can relate to; as we all want to be accepted and loved. Little Kena learns she can make a difference, while discovering not only her super powers but those of her friends as well. The theme was touching, the characters engaging (which was easy considering the Author Becky Cymbaluk based the book on her Granddaughter Kena, born with hearing loss) and the illustrations vibrant, unique and charmingly detailed.

This book stands out in the crowd of children’s literature with it’s strong message of understanding and acceptance and fun, delightfully whimsical delivery. In a day and age when a kinder, gentler humanity is desperately needed, I hope to see Super Kena break into the elusive and elite world of children’s best selling books so the masses can experience this jewel.

A nice extra touch, is the inclusion of the American Sign Language Alphabet Visual and challenge. A great read with an interactive element; who knows what child will be inspired to learn more and become yet another Super hero?!
